Discussion

The spit was excavated to define the western extent of ditch 012AD07230. It also revealed a spread of chalk and red sandstone fragments (012AD08012). The material removed was a medium sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with between 5-10% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. Pottery finds were exclusively Roman in date, although a Niedermendig lava fragment was also present.
